Mosquitoes populate around sources of stagnant water. The first step in our vector control program is to inspect the property and identify conditions that are conducive to mosquito activity. By eliminating the environment in which mosquitoes can reproduce, we can reduce the population of these pests and others, such as ticks.
Mosquitoes are small flying insects that feed on human and animal blood or pplant juices. Only female mosquitoes bite to get a blood meal for thier growing eggs. Although mosquitoes are known as a nuisance pest, they are also dangerous by transmitting diseases like malaria and locally in the Hudson valley west Nile virus. Steps you can take around your property to reduce or eliminate mosquito populations:
- Dispose of tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic parts and water holding containers
- Dispose of used tires
- Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers that are kept outdoors for draining of liquid
- Make sure roof gutters drain properly, if not have repaired by the Craig Thomas home repair division. Along with the importance of cleaning clogged gutters in the Spring and fall or installing leaf defier.
- Turn over wading pools and wheelbarrows when not in use.
- Change water in bird baths once a week and pet dishes regularly.
- Clean vegetation and debris from edges of ponds
- Maintain cleaning and chlorinating swimming pools, saunas, hot tubs and draining water regularly from pool covers.
- Maintain landscaping around your property
- Don’t overwater your yard or garden.
